Magyar Telekom optical network for nearly five thousand homes

Budapest, December 15, 2008

As an important step of its new generation access strategy announced on September 23, 2008, Magyar Telekom continues the deployment of its new generation fiber optic and cable network. Thanks to the continuous expansion of the network, today almost five thousand households have fiber optic access through which the company’s new T-Home brand provides extra-fast broadband access and IPTV service with HD content to its customers.

Thanks to the new generation access strategy, in future the company wants to make available its optical network in many new locations, using primarily the so-called G-PON technology. Parallel with these efforts the company is also upgrading its existing cable network by deploying EuroDocsis 3.0 technology, so as to enable it to carry high-speed applications. As a result of these developments, by the end of 2013 the new generation access network will be available in some 1.2 million households.
It will be an important milestone of the development process that from early December the T-Home brand, an umbrella for home and small business fixed communications and multimedia content services, will be available in the Budapest Fehérvár Apartman House, in the Debrecen Ispotály residential park, in the Miskolc Árpád-Kuruc residential estate and in the Pécs Illyés Gyula residential estate, and from January 2009 the fiber optic network will also enable the residents of Sasad Resort to take advantage of the comfort services offered by the new technology. The services enabled by the new technology will include IPTV, online video, extra fast download of music and multimedia content – at present up to 25 Mbit/s download and 5 Mbit/s upload rates (4096 kbit/sec and1024 kbit/sec committed minimum down and upload rates) are available which are expected to go up in the future. As a result of the new development viewers will be able to enjoy certain channels and – if they have a television set ready for such technology – the films offered by the video-on-demand feature, in HD quality.
The T-Home combo offer (television, Internet and telephone) will appeal primarily to large-scale Internet and data users having several computers and needing high-speed data communication connection: the package (DSL Solo Extra) available in the new development areas does not require conventional telephone connection, yet it provides voice service also without a monthly fee, and Internet access with unlimited data traffic for the discount monthly charge of HUF 11 390 with one year loyalty period. This discount offer is valid until withdrawn, subject to the availability of the technical conditions. The digital distributor required for using the service and the cost of installation are included in the service charge. If IPTV service is also ordered with this package, users will have to pay only HUF 3390 monthly for the Family package offering 51 channels with the T-Home Tripla discount.
For more detail about the offer please visit the www.t-home.hu website, call the 1412 customer service line, or visit any T-Pont shop or your nearest T-Home agent. You will also find more information about the Internet bandwidths and the committed upload and download rates on the website.
In the construction of its fiber optic network Magyar Telekom uses primarily FTTH G-PON (Gigabyte Passive Optical Network) technology, but depending on the special circumstances, it may choose different technologies, too. With the G-PON technology the optical fiber is carried from a central point to a number of homes, and bandwidth on the single fiber is split by so-called passive equipment which does not require power supply. This makes the technology highly cost-efficient. EuroDocsis 3.0 represents an upgrade of the company’s cable network (HFC) but it does not require additional expansion, only the equipment needs to be upgraded at the head-ends and in the locality of the users.
