Matáv: 200 thousand ADSL lines

Budapest, December 20, 2004 10:00

Today Matáv's staff connected the 200,000th ADSL line. With this Matáv fulfilled and by the end of the year will even exceed its 2004 plans. In 2004 the number of broadband internet accesses rose by 100%.

In 2004 Matáv made large-scale investments to spread the use of broadband internet access. As a result Matáv doubled the number of localities supplied with ADSL, so currently this service is available in 350 localities and by the end of the year additional 25 localities will be connected. With this Matáv's ADSL coverage topped 75%. In Matáv's service area already every third internet user accesses the web via ADSL line and a rising share of new residential customers selects ADSL as first internet access.

"By now the internet offer structures introduced last year significantly reduced the cost of internet usage and contributed to a great extent to the growth of internet penetration. We also laid great emphasis on improving the quality of internet usage by widely spreading broadband internet accesses. We launched also this year numerous campaigns and continuously introduced new solutions with which not only ADSL coverage can be increased, but we can provide to our customers higher quality service than earlier. We considerably stepped up ADSL access rates and will soon introduce a volume-based ADSL offer structure. Considering this year's results we have a good chance to fulfill our earlier commitment to have 400 thousand ADSL customers in Hungary by the end of 2006" - emphasized Elek Straub, Matáv's Chairman-Chief Executive Officer. He added: "All this could not have been reached without the active contribution of internet service providers since this achievement is a success of joint efforts which well shows that in Hungary the information society can be created only with cooperation and joint efforts of competitors."

Currently Matáv has 16 ADSL partners: Axelero, Drávanet, Enternet, eTtel, Euroweb, Externet, GTS-Datanet, Inter.net, Interware, Invitel, Keystone, Pantel, TV-NET, TvNetWork, T-Mobile, VIVAnet.
