As a new milestone in Magyar Telekom’s major network modernization, outdoors 4G/LTE coverage 1 has now been achieved for 99% of Budapest residents, while indoors 4G/LTE coverage of the population in Budapest has increased to 83%. The service is now also available for over 60 settlements in the country, so the possibility of using the mobile internet (outdoors) offered by 4G/LTE has opened up for close to 27 % of the country’s population

With the establishment of the 4th generation data transmission technology Telekom has taken a major step towards the spread of an advanced and forward-pointing 4G/LTE service which offers users new mobile internet experience thanks to the higher speed and reduced response time. Now that the capital city is covered, T-Mobile has started to sell the first 4G/LTE-enabled smart phones, which means that the 4G/LTE service can be used not only on the 4G/LTE-enabled tablets or with a USB modem (via PC and notebook), its benefits can also be enjoyed by using smart phones that are enabled to handle the new technology.

Christopher Mattheisen, Telekom’s Chairman-CEO emphasised in relation to the announcement: “Making 4G/LTE-enabled smart phones available will give big impetus to the spread of the 4G/LTE service. As market leader telecommunication provider Telekom was the first to bring its customers the new generation mobile service a year ago and we are happy that as a result of our latest developments it is also Telekom customers who will be able to use the service on their smart phones, which will introduce a new era of mobile internet in terms of customer experience as well!”

The Nokia 820 LTE, Nokia 920 LTE, Samsung SIII LTE and Samsung Note II LTE devices enabled to use the 4G/LTE service now appear in T-Mobile’s Xmas range of offers: they can be purchased as of today in dedicated Telekom shops and the web shop accessible through T-Mobile’s home page. Users of LTE-enabled smart phones are able to use the 4G/LTE service by subscribing to the Mozaik L, XL and XXL monthly charged tariff packages.

In the second and third weekend of December T-Mobile will ensure for those interested the possibility to try the experience the 4G/LTE service offers on the smart phones. During these two weekends people interested will be able to test and play at five Budapest malls in the afternoon and evening hours: on December 8 and 9 in front of the Europark and Campona shopping centres, on December 15 and 16 in front of Allee and Duna Plaza, and at both weekends in front of Westend. Throughout December the experiences that can be connected to the 4G/LTE service will be reflected on the walls of Telekom’s Head Office at Krisztina krt. thanks to light painting, which will also include scenic and interactive elements. Those interested can also compete in the space (Budapest districts) occupation game announced in the social media at T-Mobile’s Facebook site ( https://www.facebook.com/tmobilehungary) and can also win tickets to the exclusive double bill concert by Carbonfools and Compact Disco.

Satisfying the increasing demand for quality broadband services, from December 2012, T-Mobile is expanding its portfolio by adding two new mobile internet packages, the Net&Roll XS and Net&Roll S, and by completely renewing its mobile internet packages from January 1, 2013. Adapting the various level packages to customer needs, they will be differentiated by the band width and the data volume they include.
In the result of the changes the 4G/LTE-based service will become available for an even broader customer pool:

  • The Net&Roll S package, for example, is available for as little as HUF 4300/month. The package contains 8 GB data and the offered speed is 2 21 Mbps for downloading and 5.7 Mbps for uploading.
  • From January 1, 2013 no less than 30 GB data can be transacted with a maximum downloading speed of 60 Mbps and uploading speed of 22 Mbps for Telekom’s Gold and Platinum level customers offered the Net&Roll L with a gold card package. The price of this package will be HUF 8500/month, moreover, from January 1, it will be available at a discount for 3 months for HUF 5500 subject to two years’ loyalty period.

Both old and new customers can choose the new mobile internet packages. An additional novelty is that certain mobile internet packages contain extra services such as the free-of-charge availability of the Superservice on one occasion a year (personal help), and the online help on two occasions. For further details as well as the terms and conditions of the 4G/LTE-enabled smart phones, their availability and the tariff packages offered to accompany them, visit T-Mobile’s home page ( www.t-mobile.hu).

Over the course of the year, Telekom has taken the 4G/LTE-based mobile internet service to the agglomeration of Budapest and numerous settlements in the country. From among the country towns, the service is available in most of the area of Szombathely, Debrecen, Kecskemét, Győr, Siófok, Keszthely and Hévíz and at close to a 60 further settlements. Thanks to the most recent developments the 4G/LTE service can be used also in Alsónémedi, Dunanagyvarsány and Ecser within the service area, subject to possession of an adequate device and tariff package.
According to Ericsson’s most recent mobility report LTE is one of the most advanced and most rapidly developing systems in the history of mobile communications. The technology is currently in the phase of being installed and established everywhere, and the current 55 million total number of subscriptions is expected to grow to 1.6 billion by 2018. According to expectations over half of the world’s population will be able to enjoy the advantages of this technology within five years.

Network development, the purpose of which is to be able to serve even the multiple of the prevailing network capacity, will continue next year. Telekom’s future plans include, among others, that by the end of 2013 it will ensure the availability of 4G/LTE at additional settlements in the country, enhance the nation-wide 3G/UMTS coverage and the HSPA+ service with a 42 Mbps speed at all its 3G-enabled base stations where the available frequencies allow. In addition, while taking steps in the development of its network, Telekom will raise residential EDGE coverage from the prevailing 90% to close to 100%. The technology is supplied by Ericsson, which at the same time ensures, in the framework of a contract on cooperation, the continuous high-level, safe, cost-efficient and energy-saving operation of the mobile network.

1. External coverage: Mobile internet service is available outdoors in the area concerned. Internal coverage: Mobile internet service can also be used within the building in the area concerned, taking into consideration the fact that the signal is generally stronger near windows and on higher floors. Reinforced concrete, coloured glass and heat-reflecting foil weaken the signal considerably. Surrounding buildings may also block the signals.

2. The speed values offered are the (highest) speed determined by the service provider as available for the mobile internet package concerned. The availability of the band width offered and the guaranteed speed depend mainly on the available technology in the area covered. The speed value the subscriber experiences depends on possession of an adequately enabled device and tariff packages that support the technology concerned, as well as on the ability of the network to support the particular speed at the particular point, and on radio and usage conditions.
Magyar Telekom’s guaranteed down- and uploading speed according to its currently valid General Service Terms and Conditions (ÁSZF) is universally 0 Mbit/s on the various technologies, however the speed available in at least 80% of the cases continues to be (2G/GPRS: 0.03 Mbit/s / 0.008 Mbit/s, 3G(R99): 0.15 Mbit/s / 0.15 Mbit/s, 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA: 2 Mbit/s / 0.8 Mbit/s, 4G/LTE network: 4 Mbit/s and 2 Mbit/s.)
