Magyar Telekom hits TOP 3 in global sustainability ranking

Budapest, September 23, 2014 14:00

Magyar Telekom has earned the distinction of being included in the prestigious third place in the report of Oekom Research,  prepared according to the operation of the world’s 108 telecommunication companies along sustainability aspects.

The ranking of the world’s telecommunication companies was disclosed in the report according to which Magyar Telekom trails the parent company Deutsche Telekom and BT Group by taking the third place in the global ranking according to sustainability aspects.

Chief Executive Officer Christopher Mattheisen said, „Magyar Telekom’s ranking fills me with a fantastic feeling, as no Hungarian company has yet achieved a success of this volume in the area of sustainability. We have overtaken the world’s largest global telecommunication companies, which is a global success for Telekom and also for the country. This is a recognition of our conscious work for long years with the aim to enable Telekom to contribute to the extent its size justifies to the development of the society, economy and the environment.”.

Sustainability management aligned with the challenges of the future is of a key importance in the operation of business companies.
Oekom Research, an independent agency analysing business ventures from sustainability aspects, examined and ranked separately the opportunities and risks in the telecommunications sector, the sustainability management of telecommunication companies, their industry specific strategy and achievements. Sustainability issues of key importance, i.e. the endeavours and achievements of companies in the areas of responsibility for climate protection, emission reduction, closing the digital divide, society, products and services, have been examined along with industry trends such as mobile internet penetration, energy demand of network operation, innovation and data security.

The research also probed into the extent of the service companies’ customer focus, from responsible marketing activity through the process of complaint management to data protection. Telecom service providers have a high level access to confident customer data for which reason the responsible, efficient and secure data management is an indispensable requirement. This latter aspect has an extraordinary significance in the light of recent phising incidents. Another review element of a similar weight has been the endeavours and achievements of companies aimed at closing the digital divide through the identification of both regional and social differences, the protection of children and youth from harmful contents, the expansion of broadband internet access and the dynamics of developments.

Magyar Telekom has been addressing sustainability issues resulting from its operation for nearly 20 years, and in 2000 it was among the first Hungarian businesses having established a separate environment protection unit, subsequently coordinating the company’s responsible operation processes. Telekom’s sustainability activities are distinguished by their comprehensive, projected and long-term approach, and the company is currently implementing already its third five-year sustainability strategy.

Oekom Research is an independent agency analysing investment targets in terms of sustainability. The agency analyses over 3,400 companies and 57 countries with regard to their environmental and social performance, and its clients include companies offering financial services and managing an overall amount of EUR 600 billion. Oekom Research examined the environmental and social impacts of operation of the Magyar Telekom Group first in 2009 and, like later once again in 2013, it ranked the Group in the prime, i.e. recommended for investment category.
