Major support for the National Oncology Institute

Budapest, November 11, 2002

Dr. Emil Farkas, chairman of the board of trustees of the Tumor Surgery Foundation, received the 2 800 000 HUF donation presented by Dr. Bálint Nagy, communication director of Matáv, in the National Oncology Institute this morning. The foundation will use the entire sum of the donation to buy special chest surgery instruments.

The foundation, which has been operating since 1991, has been making continuous efforts for more than a decade to improve the conditions of the theoretical and practical work of the Surgery Department of the National Oncology Institute, to help the specialists learn international experiences and Hungarian achievements and to publish the results of the group' work.
Dr. Emil Farkas, chairman of the board of trustees, said: "n order to fully attain our objectives, it is indispensable to develop the tools and equipment of the surgery department which are needed to perform advanced and successful tumor surgery, and which we cannot procure through the National Health Insurance. With the almost three million forints donated by Matáv, we will buy special instruments which will enable us to perform various chest surgery operations using the latest technology."

"Unfortunately, in the last few years we have been hearing more and more about the growing number of tumor cases, the treatment of which requires the most advanced medical practice and equipment. We trust that, with the help of the equipment purchased with our donation, the foundation will be able to make successful efforts in diagnosing and treating tumorous diseases," Dr. Bálint Nagy, Matáv's communication director added.

Matáv targets its donations on seven priority areas (treatment of cardiovascular diseases, health promotion programs, treatment of communication disorders, sport activities of disadvantaged people, cultural initiatives of disadvantaged localities, treatment of the health and social problems of children, telephone helplines), offering larger amounts each year for charitable purposes. Last year its charitable donations amounted to almost 70 million HUF.
