Telekom accelerates 4G at Lake Balaton

Budapest, August 12, 2016 15:00

  • 300 megabyte mobile internet was activated in the frequented areas of 8 settlements around the shore of Lake Balaton.
  • Following 14 cities in Eastern Hungary, Telekom also implemented developments in Western Hungary, enabling vacationers in frequented parts of 8 settlements along the shore of Lake Balaton to enjoy the benefits of the lightening fast mobile internet.
  • The outdoor population 4G network coverage of Telekom reached 97.6 percent.

Telekom in frequented areas of 8 settlements along the shore of Lake Balaton doubled the theoretical speed of its 4G mobile internet network, reaching even up to 300 Mbit/sec 1 . Settlements included in the development: Balatonfüred, Balatonkenese, Balatonlelle, Balatonszabadi, Fonyód, Gyenesdiás, Keszthely and Siófok. By year end Telekom plans to activate the 4G+ (LTE-Advanced) high speed broadband mobile internet technology on another 100 base stations.

Network development - among others – are needed to meet the increased data requirement consequent to the increasing number of smart devices and video consumption, as well as increased capacity demand on vacation sites. In settlements around Lake Balaton the 4G measured 4G data traffic in June this year increased to twice of that last year, reaching almost monthly 240 TB. (In comparison: the data traffic in a winter month amounts to about 37 TB.)

In areas covered with the 4G+ technology customers can even experience twice the data transmission speed, using appropriately enabled devices and tariff packages. 2 Customers can achieve higher speeds and enjoy better user experience in peak hours of mass events – in stadiums or at festivals – during activities requiring higher data traffic, like uploading or downloading video, music contents or applications.

Residents effected in the developments can exploit the advantages of the 4G+ service holding any of the more than 20 smart devices from the Telekom assortment (marked as „Category 6”), with the operator’s Next M and Next XL smartphone packages, as well as the Net&Roll M and Net&Roll L mobile internet packages or their Gold Card versions. Practically, by now all smart devices within the Telekom assortment are enabled to connect to the 4G network.

The outdoor population coverage of the Telekom 4G coverage is 97.6%, while indoor coverage is almost 85 percent.

1) Reaching the nominal maximal speed is dependent on using an appropriately enabled terminal, supporting the given technology, as well as on if the network at that given location supports the speed, and also on the radio and traffic conditions.

2) Requirements for using the LTE-A based data service are:
- LTE-A enabled device supporting the bandwidth used by Telekom,
- LTE-A enabled monthly or temporary fare tariff package,
- LTE-A network coverage.
